L.D. Arts College was established in 1937, and for over nine decades it has remained a distinguished center of academic excellence, upholding strong moral values. By offering education in various languages, the institution promotes the holistic development of students. Within this framework, Sanskrit holds a prominent place as a discipline that preserves and enriches Indian culture and the traditional knowledge system. Under the visionary leadership of Acharya Purushottam Mavlankar, the college has developed a rich and illustrious academic legacy.

Since its inception, the Department of Sanskrit has achieved a distinctive position through its commitment to quality education and a research-oriented approach. The department has been enriched by the contributions of eminent scholars such as Prof. A. G. Bhatt, Prof. Bansidhar Bhatt, Prof. Pradyumna Vora, Prof. Ramchandra Athavale, Prof. Esther Solomon, Prof. Jaydev Shukla, Prof. P. U. Shastri, Prof. Dhirajlal Shastri, Prof. Kantaben and Prof. Gajendra Panda. Prof. A. G. Bhatt was honored with the Bhandarkar Grammar Award from the University of Mumbai and was renowned as a “Modern Pāṇini”. The collective vision of these distinguished scholars was to cultivate deep proficiency in Sanskrit among students. Many alumni of the department are currently serving in prestigious administrative, academic and research positions.

The curriculum of the department offers a systematic and analytical study of Vedic literature, Upanishads, Sanskrit epics, drama, Vedanta, Puranas, grammar and Alankara Shastra (poetics). This academic engagement fosters linguistic proficiency as well as the development of confidence, ethical values, critical thinking, practical wisdom, spiritual insight and leadership qualities among students.
