B.A. in Sanskrit

L.D. Arts College, Ahmedabad, is a prestigious institution established in Gujarat that has been making significant contributions to the study of languages since 1937. In particular, the contribution of the Department of Sanskrit has been highly remarkable. It has developed a strong academic tradition for the in-depth study of Sanskrit language and literature. The department has provided specialized education in subjects such as Vedic literature, grammar, philosophy and poetics. It has produced numerous scholars, researchers and teachers who have worked towards the promotion of Sanskrit across Gujarat and India. The department has also contributed to the study, editing and translation of Sanskrit texts. Through cultural activities, seminars and conferences it has enhanced interest in Sanskrit. From 1937 to the present, the Department of Sanskrit has maintained a balance between traditional and modern education. Under the guidance of learned faculty, it has built a strong academic tradition and has made significant contributions to the promotion of Sanskrit, research and the preservation of culture.

To attain proficiency in the Sanskrit language through reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. To acquire a comprehensive understanding of Sanskrit grammar, including Sandhi, Samāsa and Kāraka. To develop knowledge of Rūpamālā (verbal roots and nominal forms). To cultivate competence in language construction and translation skills.

Sanskrit Literature
To develop an understanding of the epics (Mahākāvyas), including selected portions from the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata. To study classical Sanskrit drama, including works of renowned playwrights such as Kālidāsa, Bhāsa and Bhāravi. To acquire knowledge of Sanskrit poetic (Kāvya) and prose (Gadya) literature.

Philosophy
To develop an understanding of Indian philosophy, including the systems of Nyāya, Vedānta and Sāṅkhya, and to comprehend the principles of philosophy through the study of the Upaniṣads and the Bhagavad Gītā, with particular emphasis on the concepts of Karma, Jñāna and Bhakti.

To develop proficiency in translation from Sanskrit into Gujarati and English. To cultivate skills in essay writing and academic composition. To attain in-depth understanding through the interpretation and exegesis of Sanskrit ślokas.

Foundation of Sanskrit Language
A foundational understanding of the basic elements of the Sanskrit language, such as the alphabet, word formation, and basic grammar, will be developed.

Understanding of Sanskrit Literature
A basic as well as analytical understanding of the major forms of Sanskrit literature such as poetry, drama, prose and epics will be developed. Literary features of poetic forms will be identified and logical analysis of plot, structure, characters and events will be carried out.

Reading and Comprehension Skills
The ability to read, comprehend and interpret Sanskrit texts using a systematic method will be acquired. Basic and structured knowledge of the cultural and religious background associated with Sanskrit will be developed. Skills in translation and interpretation of poetic works will also be enhanced.

Literary Evaluation
The ability to identify poetic features, figures of speech (Alankaras) and stylistic elements in Sanskrit drama will be developed, along with the ability to critically evaluate the position of a work within the Sanskrit dramatic tradition.

Understanding of Dramatic Theory
A systematic understanding of the fundamental elements of drama such as Rasa, Bhava and Abhinaya will be developed, and the relationship between dramatic works and the principles of the Nāṭyaśāstra will be logically explained.

Proficiency in translating Sanskrit verses into Gujarati, along with syntactical analysis (Anvaya) and interpretation, will be developed. Basic knowledge of metre (Chhandas) and compound formation (Samasa) will also enhance language skills.

An understanding of ancient Indian culture, polity and social values will be developed. Religious and ethical ideas depicted in dramatic works will be identified.
