The Department of History was established in 1937 with the aim of promoting a deep understanding of the past and its relevance to the present. It is one of the significant departments of L.D. Arts College. The college offers this subject at the UG level (in Gujarati Medium).

History is not merely the study of past events, but it is an important discipline that helps students understand cultural heritage, social transformations, and the evolution of civilizations. It plays a crucial role in developing critical thinking and awareness among youth to understand present-day issues in a broader context.

The department emphasizes that History is a systematic and analytical study, similar to other academic disciplines. Students are encouraged to develop an interest in historical research, interpretation of sources, and analytical writing. The department is guided by experienced faculty members who continuously motivate students to explore historical knowledge deeply.

The true strength of the Department of History lies in its highly qualified and dedicated faculty members. Their passion for teaching and research creates an intellectually enriching environment. Classrooms are interactive spaces where students engage in discussions, analyze historical sources, and critically examine events, ideas, and movements that shaped the world.

The department organizes expert lectures every year to make students aware of topics such as ancient, medieval, and modern history, Indian national movement, world history, cultural heritage, and historiography.

Apart from academic learning, the department also organizes educational tours and visits to historical places, museums, and heritage sites. These visits help students gain practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of historical monuments, traditions, and cultural practices.

Students are also encouraged to participate in awareness programs, exhibitions, and activities related to preservation of heritage and understanding social and cultural diversity. Such initiatives help students connect history with contemporary society.

The Department of History focuses on developing research skills and historical thinking among students. Faculty members contribute to academic literature through research papers, and books. With a strong belief in the importance of historical knowledge, the department aims to develop students who are culturally aware, socially responsible, and intellectually capable at national and international levels.

Thus, the Department of History serves not only as a centre of academic learning but also as a platform where students understand the past, analyze the present, and prepare for the future.
